We welcome <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ideas from faculty and staff, including critique sessions, screenings that showcase a classes\u2019 final projects and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The screen is reserved for visually-engaging presentations including animation, short films, kinetic-art projects and rotating still images, and it is intended to showcase art, scientific images, library collections, data visualizations of research and other creative expressions appropriate for an academic research library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The screen is not a billboard or jumbotron for advertising or promotional messaging. Instead, it is a platform for artistic and cultural expression, a way to make visible the unique expressions of the VCU academic and artistic community. Please be aware that the Cabell Screen Committee meets once a month to discuss and plan exhibits in advance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quality Needs<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At least 15 total images. More preferred. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Best images are bold and simple, without many fine lines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please be aware that we reserve the right to size or crop images to create the best image for the screen. Sometimes, the best approach will be to focus on a detail of the work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">File Formats<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Files should contain the artist\u2019s name<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Still Images<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Highest resolution (dpi) possible &#8211; ideally 128 pixels wide x 140 pixels high, 300 pixels\/inch, 8-bit color with a black background<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Video Files<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Video length can vary dependent on work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Video sized in either a 1:1 square format, or if they want to match the size of the screen, the aspect ratio is 35:32 vertical. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Video files formats accepted: mp4 (preferred) and .mov<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recommend exporting in Premiere or Adobe Media Encoder with the h.264 codec at 12 mbps.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Copyright and Permissions<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fill out our online permission form. The artist retains copyright and gives VCU Libraries permission to exhibit their work for a finite period. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/go.vcu.edu\/cabellscreenshowcase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic\/Student Form <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/go.vcu.edu\/cabellscreenform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Community Form<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Promoting the Exhibit<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide a brief written description of the content and, if applicable, title of the exhibit. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide an artist\u2019s statement or bio\/background information. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Technical Information <\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The screen is a combination of woven, semi-transparent stainless-steel structures, which allows daylight into the building. Embedded in the structure are LED. (This can be easily adjusted depending on the items or the artist\u2019s vision.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stand alone video or kinetic installations will also be shown.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">committee meets once a month to discuss and plan exhibits in advance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the big screen, which will be programmed at irregular hours and mostly during high-traffic times at the library. The screen has been installed with the hope to intrigue, inspire and inform the tens of thousands of VCU community members who pass by daily. This media facade is approximately 400-square feet of digital exhibition space, 21 feet wide by 24 feet tall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The screen \u2014 also known as a media facade, a vitrine, or, simply, The Cabell Screen \u2014 was installed as part of the library\u2019s $50.8 million expansion and renovation, using funds set aside for equipment and furnishings.
