Membership on this council is an opportunity to do that.”

Said Tam: “I’m looking forward to working with the other council members to strengthen the school’s external funding track record. Together, we can rethink the applicant experience from start to finish so that our colleagues feel supported and our proposals are as competitive as possible.”

“We want to emphasize that we’re here to help,” Tam said. “Being part of the council helps us accomplish that objective and further support the school’s research mission.”

The council was established as part of the Business School’s commitment to transdisciplinary research excellence under its strategic plan, Opportunity 2030, said Mayoor Mohan, professor and associate dean for strategic affairs and research initiatives. While the council will not hold formal decision-making or oversight authority, Mohan noted, it will provide crucial input across the breadth of the school’s research mission, enterprise and goals. This includes matters related to faculty research support programs, internal and external research programs, and transdisciplinary and collaborative research initiatives, Mohan said.

“Over the last couple of years, I’ve been thinking about how to translate my behavioral research, and accounting research generally, in ways that professionals, firms and regulators can understand and benefit from,” Andiola said. “I believe this resonates with what we should be doing in the School of Business — the connection to community and real impact versus only academic impact. I’m a big proponent of that and believe it’s something we all should consider to move the school forward.”

Brooks said he has “a history of working across disciplines and participating in grant-funded research, and these are two things that historically, business school research hasn’t taken advantage of. We tended to be discipline specific. So I’m excited that research is being prioritized” as demonstrated by the council’s formation.

Brooks added that he’s especially eager to help create more awareness. “Our research profile has really increased,” he said. “There’s a lot of good stuff happening, and I’m looking forward to helping to highlight the impact of it all.”

Davis said he wants the council to motivate and enable faculty members to pursue socially important questions. “I think the real key is to encourage people to swing for the fences – to think about what they really want to know, and what they haven’t thought of before.”

“That’s where progress lies,” he said, “and as a consequence, the Business School’s research reputation is elevated.”

The council is expected to establish goals and priorities, among other agenda items, when it convenes with Mohan in May.

<img decoding="async" width="800" height="600" its magnitude has remained largely unquantified. We address this gap by examining culture × student status interactions across 88 meta-analytic databases. For each database, we estimate moderation effects for 50 country-level cultural variables and summarize the resulting interaction coefficients using second-order meta-analysis. Across more than four thousand tests, the mean absolute difference between student and nonstudent effects is approximately r = .05. Relative importance analyses show that these differences are driven primarily by the substantive bivariate relationship under study rather than by the specific cultural dimension examined. Relationships involving job attitudes exhibit the strongest culture × student status interactions, with many student–nonstudent differences around Δr = .10, whereas relationships involving psychological traits show the weakest interactions, often below Δr = .03. Results converge across multiple levels of aggregation and analytic representations. Taken together, the findings demonstrate that generalizability risk is systematic and conditional rather than categorical, providing empirical benchmarks to inform theory development, research design, and editorial decision-making in international business research.

04102026

Research-focused talks highlighting our commitment to research excellence and transdisciplinary research, featuring management and entrepreneurship professor Frank Bosco, Ph.D.

[3,118
26,21,19
post-3934","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-event","category-research-event","tag-department-of-management-and-entrepreneurship","tag-research","tag-school-of-business
["GET

Accomplishments, goals affirm our mission as VCU marks Research Weeks

By Mayoor “Max” Mohan, Ph.D.
Associate Dean for Strategic Affairs and Research Initiatives

As VCU kicks off Research Weeks 2026, an institution-wide celebration of the discovery, innovation and scholarship happening across the university, the School of Business is proud to share a look at where our research enterprise stands and where it’s headed.

Research is central to our mission and our momentum. Guided by our Opportunity 2030 Strategic Plan and its theme of Unlimited Opportunity Creation, we are investing in scholarship and thought leadership that transcends traditional boundaries, advances new knowledge and creates opportunities for our students, partners and society at large.

Transdisciplinary research is one of two guiding pillars of Opportunity 2030, and Research Excellence is one of the four core energies. Together, they reflect a clear commitment: Our research will help identify new opportunities for students, businesses and the community, with a focus on the intersection of business and adjacent fields.

Our accomplishments over the past year reflect that commitment.

Strong scholarly output

Our colleagues published 91 journal articles in calendar year 2025, with contributions from every academic department in the school. Of those, 55 appeared in journals rated A* or A by the Australian Business Deans Council, roughly 60 percent of total output.

Additionally, eight articles were published in the Financial Times Top 50 journal list. This work spanned topics from algorithmic management and AI in health care to sustainable supply chains, corporate finance, and the psychology of consumer behavior—reflecting the breadth and depth of our school’s research portfolio.

External funding growth

Strong scholarship also means pursuing the external funding that makes ambitious research possible. Although business schools are not traditionally grant-intensive environments, we are making meaningful progress in this area. In 2025, we submitted 11 grant proposals totaling more than $3.1 million, with eight awarded for nearly $1.4 million. An additional five sub-award applications brought our total applied funding to over $4.2 million. Several of these collaborations illustrate the transdisciplinary vision at the heart of our strategy, including partnerships with the American Cancer Society, the Women’s Health Institute, and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality through VCU’s College of Life Sciences.

Strengthened infrastructure

Sustained research productivity requires more than individual effort; it requires robust institutional support. This year marked significant progress on that front. We launched a four-tiered internal funding program—Small Research Grants, Medium Research Grants, Research Excellence Fellowships and the Dean’s Distinguished Fellows—creating a clear continuum of support from seed funding through sustained scholarly recognition.

We also established the school’s first Research Advisory Council to provide strategic guidance on long-term research priorities and culture. And for the first time, we embedded a dedicated research communications function within our marketing and communications team, ensuring the impact of our scholarship and thought leadership reaches audiences well beyond the academy.

The next generation

A thriving research enterprise depends on the next generation of scholars. This year, we made significant investments in our doctoral programs by increasing stipends, renovating Ph.D. student offices, completing a comprehensive program audit and introducing dedicated conference travel funding. We also launched the Outstanding Ph.D. Student Teaching Award to recognize excellence in the classroom alongside research training. That investment starts early, too. Colleagues in the school developed and taught UNIV 191: Every Ram’s a Researcher, a course designed to help first-year students recognize the value and opportunities of academic research. From first-year classrooms to doctoral dissertations, we are building a culture where research is part of every student’s experience.

Looking ahead

As we move into the next academic year, we will continue building on this foundation by expanding the Office of Research, deepening external partnerships, and growing our visibility as a school where rigorous, impactful research drives opportunity for all. Over the next four weeks, we’ll be sharing a series of research-focused articles that spotlight the people, projects and ideas behind the numbers. Stay tuned.

[2,95
21,19
post-3945","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-research","tag-research","tag-school-of-business
["GET

Ahead of the draft, Jason Merrick, Ph.D., models probabilities for a certain NFL team.

By Laura Stassi

Jason Merrick, Ph.D., and his colleagues initially developed a statistical modeling method as a college admissions tool, but at the request of a certain NFL team, it’s been repurposed. That means this year in the first round, the 3-14 Las Vegas Raiders get first choice, and the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks go last.

Scouts for the teams already have evaluated the prospects on traits including prowess, perceived fortitude and college game-time performance. With those ratings, “team management determines an overall rating to decide which players they’ll go after and which of their precious draft picks to use on them,” Merrick said. The earlier a player is chosen, the higher his pay.

To develop the model, “the NFL team gave us 14 years of rating data on every player they scouted, not just those who were drafted or who played for this specific team,” Merrick said. “So we’ve got multiple predictions that we aggregate into a rating that we then chart against percent of cap for a second contract.”

“A player’s first contract is based on draft position, so it’s a prediction: how good a team thinks you’ll be,” Merrick said. “But your second contract is based on your market value to the team, so it’s an outcome.”

Percent of cap is the portion of the team’s salary budget devoted to each player. Merrick noted it is difficult to determine how good a player has been because “you’d use different metrics” to measure the performance of a quarterback, for example, than for a defensive lineman.

“So our way isn’t necessarily a perfect way,” Merrick said, “but it’s the least bad way of doing it.”

Merrick said his model shows that “maybe you don’t go for the highest-rated player in the draft because overspending on them doesn’t necessarily lead to a winning outcome. We see that the high-rated picks performed a bit better on average. But you could end up with nothing from that expensive choice.”

Merrick and his colleagues’ model is detailed in the Wharton School research paper “Decision-making with Ordinal Ratings.” It also has been presented at academic and technology conferences, Merrick said, adding that he’s working on revisions for upcoming publication in a top scientific journal.

Meanwhile, Merrick has his own prediction. If the unnamed NFL team sticks with its draft strategy, “it will trade down,” he said, “recognizing that the players rated in the middle of the pack have a very decent chance of being as good as those rated at the very top. So if I can trade down and get three picks in a later round instead of one pick in the top round, I have a better chance of a better outcome with one of the three than with that one player.”

[2,95
23,21,19
post-3930","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-research","tag-department-of-supply-chain-management-and-analytics","tag-research","tag-school-of-business
["GET

Investopedia Editor in Chief Caleb Silver visited VCU to talk with students about investing, saving and preparing for the financial realities of adulthood.

By Megan Nash

Would you rather be rich or wealthy?

Caleb Silver, chief business editor of People Inc. and editor in chief of Investopedia, opened a session at the VCU School of Business last month with that question.

One student answered in terms of generational wealth. Another said being rich could mean more than money. Silver offered his own answer: Wealth, he said, means being able to afford your time.

Silver visited the school for two presentations — one open to students across VCU and another for a class — and met with the Student Managed Investment Portfolio, or SMIP, a student-run fund. Across those sessions, he urged students to think about money before graduation, when many will begin making financial decisions on their own.

The event was organized through the VCU Financial Success Center by Virginia Credit Union, which offers students financial education and one-on-one coaching. Silver said the appearance was part of a broader effort at Investopedia to bring conversations about money out of browsers and social feeds and into classrooms.

“College is the last stop where you have the opportunity to learn how to become the CFO of your own life,” Silver said in an interview during his visit. “Nobody teaches us that when we get out of here.”

His visit came as financial education has gained more national attention. Thirty-five states require a personal finance course for high school graduation, according to the Council for Economic Education, even as financial literacy among adults remains low.

Silver said he was not trying to frighten students into investing. Many young adults, he said, are entering what he called “adulting, life-stage planning and management” while coming from families that may view investing as risky, unpredictable or off-limits.

He often starts by asking students what kind of life they want and what is important to them.

In class, he put it this way: How much does it cost to be you now, and how much will it cost to be the person you want to be later?

The discussion turned to housing, spending, saving and the gap between what life costs and what many young adults expect to earn. Silver told students that waiting until they feel fully ready can be a mistake.

“You don’t need $100,000,” he said. “You need $10 to get started. $5 to get started.”

He returned often to the same point: Students may not have much money yet, but they do have time. “The magic in the market is time,” he told them. “And what do you guys have? Plenty of it. Plenty of time.”

Later, in his meeting with SMIP, students walked Silver through their holdings and explained how they were thinking about different sectors in the portfolio.

Liam Baumgardner (B.S. ’28), a finance major and sector leader in SMIP, said Silver pushed the group to think more carefully about consumer discretionary companies and where those businesses were making their money.

“He knew almost all of our companies, which is very impressive, and showed broad market knowledge,” said Baumgardner.

Baumgardner said Silver’s comments were useful because they were specific. The discussion, he said, gave students a reason to revisit some of their assumptions, including how they were thinking about consumer spending and sector definitions.

For Baumgardner, the meeting also offered a view of the kind of work he hopes to do.

“I was looking at him sitting in the front and I was like, I would love to do this one day,” he said. “I’d love to have his knowledge and be able to help others like he is to us.”

Silver said he hopes students remember the moment financial concepts begin to click, whether that means understanding compounding or seeing themselves not just as consumers but as investors.

“It would be fantastic to learn that at the age of 21,” he said. “Not 41.”

Students interested in financial coaching can schedule an appointment with the VCU Financial Success Center by VACU.
To hear more from Caleb Silver, follow him on social media and visit Investopedia for additional financial news and advice.

Investopedia Editor in Chief Caleb Silver visited VCU to talk with students about investing, saving and preparing for the financial realities of adulthood.

[2
20,66,19,31
post-3928","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-department-of-economics","tag-department-of-finance","tag-school-of-business","tag-virginia-credit-union-financial-success-center
["GET

When: Friday, April 17 @ 4–7 p.m.
Where: Shift Retail Lab – 1235 W Broad St
Host: VCU da Vinci Center
Contact: Ashley Wenger, wengeran@vcu.edu
Audience: Current undergraduate students, Current graduate students, Alumni, Faculty & Staff, Business Community

Help entrepreneurship BLOOM at Demo Day!

Join the VCU da Vinci Center for an evening celebrating entrepreneurship.
