href="https://directory.business.vcu.edu/profile.php?urn=jrmerric" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jason Merrick, Ph.D., and his colleagues initially developed a statistical modeling method as a college admissions tool, but at the request of a certain NFL team, it’s been repurposed. The team — Merrick’s not allowed to name names — is utilizing the model to more accurately predict whether money it spends in the draft on the most desirable amateur football players will pay off after they go pro.

“You see all these teams that are trading multiple draft picks away to get a top draft pick,” said Merrick, professor of supply chain management and analytics in the VCU School of Business. “But our model shows the risk of chasing those players.”

This year’s draft is April 23–25. During seven rounds of picks, the 32 NFL teams choose players to add to their respective rosters. Teams can give away or trade their turns in the draft but typically in the first round, teams with the worst records the previous season choose first, in ascending order. That means this year in the first round, the 3-14 Las Vegas Raiders get first choice, and the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks go last.

Scouts for the teams already have evaluated the prospects on traits including prowess, perceived fortitude and college game-time performance. With those ratings, “team management determines an overall rating to decide which players they’ll go after and which of their precious draft picks to use on them,” Merrick said. The earlier a player is chosen, the higher his pay.

To develop the model, “the NFL team gave us 14 years of rating data on every player they scouted, not just those who were drafted or who played for this specific team,” Merrick said. “So we’ve got multiple predictions that we aggregate into a rating that we then chart against percent of cap for a second contract.”

“A player’s first contract is based on draft position, so it’s a prediction: how good a team thinks you’ll be,” Merrick said. “But your second contract is based on your market value to the team, so it’s an outcome.”

Percent of cap is the portion of the team’s salary budget devoted to each player. Merrick noted it is difficult to determine how good a player has been because “you’d use different metrics” to measure the performance of a quarterback, for example, than for a defensive lineman.

“So our way isn’t necessarily a perfect way,” Merrick said, “but it’s the least bad way of doing it.”

Merrick said his model shows that “maybe you don’t go for the highest-rated player in the draft because overspending on them doesn’t necessarily lead to a winning outcome. We see that the high-rated picks performed a bit better on average. But you could end up with nothing from that expensive choice.”

Merrick and his colleagues’ model is detailed in the Wharton School research paper “Decision-making with Ordinal Ratings.” It also has been presented at academic and technology conferences, Merrick said, adding that he’s working on revisions for upcoming publication in a top scientific journal.

Meanwhile, Merrick has his own prediction. If the unnamed NFL team sticks with its draft strategy, “it will trade down,” he said, “recognizing that the players rated in the middle of the pack have a very decent chance of being as good as those rated at the very top. So if I can trade down and get three picks in a later round instead of one pick in the top round, I have a better chance of a better outcome with one of the three than with that one player.”

[2,95
23,21,19
post-3930","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-research","tag-department-of-supply-chain-management-and-analytics","tag-research","tag-school-of-business
["GET

Investopedia Editor in Chief Caleb Silver visited VCU to talk with students about investing, saving and preparing for the financial realities of adulthood.

By Megan Nash

Would you rather be rich or wealthy?

Caleb Silver, chief business editor of People Inc. and editor in chief of Investopedia, opened a session at the VCU School of Business last month with that question.

One student answered in terms of generational wealth. Another said being rich could mean more than money. Silver offered his own answer: Wealth, he said, means being able to afford your time.

Silver visited the school for two presentations — one open to students across VCU and another for a class — and met with the Student Managed Investment Portfolio, or SMIP, a student-run fund. Across those sessions, he urged students to think about money before graduation, when many will begin making financial decisions on their own.

The event was organized through the VCU Financial Success Center by Virginia Credit Union, which offers students financial education and one-on-one coaching. Silver said the appearance was part of a broader effort at Investopedia to bring conversations about money out of browsers and social feeds and into classrooms.

“College is the last stop where you have the opportunity to learn how to become the CFO of your own life,” Silver said in an interview during his visit. “Nobody teaches us that when we get out of here.”

His visit came as financial education has gained more national attention. Thirty-five states require a personal finance course for high school graduation, according to the Council for Economic Education, even as financial literacy among adults remains low.

Silver said he was not trying to frighten students into investing. Many young adults, he said, are entering what he called “adulting, life-stage planning and management” while coming from families that may view investing as risky, unpredictable or off-limits.

He often starts by asking students what kind of life they want and what is important to them.

In class, he put it this way: How much does it cost to be you now, and how much will it cost to be the person you want to be later?

The discussion turned to housing, spending, saving and the gap between what life costs and what many young adults expect to earn. Silver told students that waiting until they feel fully ready can be a mistake.

“You don’t need $100,000,” he said. “You need $10 to get started. $5 to get started.”

He returned often to the same point: Students may not have much money yet, but they do have time. “The magic in the market is time,” he told them. “And what do you guys have? Plenty of it. Plenty of time.”

Later, in his meeting with SMIP, students walked Silver through their holdings and explained how they were thinking about different sectors in the portfolio.

Liam Baumgardner (B.S. ’28), a finance major and sector leader in SMIP, said Silver pushed the group to think more carefully about consumer discretionary companies and where those businesses were making their money.

“He knew almost all of our companies, which is very impressive, and showed broad market knowledge,” said Baumgardner.

Baumgardner said Silver’s comments were useful because they were specific. The discussion, he said, gave students a reason to revisit some of their assumptions, including how they were thinking about consumer spending and sector definitions.

For Baumgardner, the meeting also offered a view of the kind of work he hopes to do.

“I was looking at him sitting in the front and I was like, I would love to do this one day,” he said. “I’d love to have his knowledge and be able to help others like he is to us.”

Silver said he hopes students remember the moment financial concepts begin to click, whether that means understanding compounding or seeing themselves not just as consumers but as investors.

“It would be fantastic to learn that at the age of 21,” he said. “Not 41.”

Students interested in financial coaching can schedule an appointment with the VCU Financial Success Center by VACU.
To hear more from Caleb Silver, follow him on social media and visit Investopedia for additional financial news and advice.

Investopedia Editor in Chief Caleb Silver visited VCU to talk with students about investing, saving and preparing for the financial realities of adulthood.

[2
20,66,19,31
post-3928","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-department-of-economics","tag-department-of-finance","tag-school-of-business","tag-virginia-credit-union-financial-success-center
["GET

When: Friday, April 17 @ 4–7 p.m.
Where: Shift Retail Lab – 1235 W Broad St
Host: VCU da Vinci Center
Contact: Ashley Wenger, wengeran@vcu.edu
Audience: Current undergraduate students, Current graduate students, Alumni, Faculty & Staff, Business Community

Help entrepreneurship BLOOM at Demo Day!

Join the VCU da Vinci Center for an evening celebrating entrepreneurship.
