In April 2026, VCU Executive MBA (EMBA) alumni will have the opportunity to travel with the EMBA Class of 2027 to Japan as part of the program’s Global Challenge trip. The 10-day experience, led by faculty member Katie Gilstrap, will explore Japan’s business culture approach to leadership, design and service.
Participants will visit companies known for manufacturing, innovation and customer experience, including a stop at Toyota to observe its Lean Management methodology. Other scheduled visits focus on branding, product design and hospitality, with opportunities to engage with executives and local experts. Along the way, expect culinary mastery and omotenashi—the spirit of Japanese hospitality.
“We’re thrilled to welcome EMBA alumni to join our 2026 Global Challenge trip to Japan,” Gilstrap said. “It’s an experience filled with irreplicable moments and personalized, behind-the-scenes access you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a way to embrace lifelong learning, stay connected with our program and forge new friendships and professional relationships along the way.”
The trip runs April 9-19 and is open to alumni, current students and approved guests.
“My hope for alumni traveling with the EMBA class of 2027 is that they build connections with current students and other alumni,” said Butch Sarma, director of the Executive MBA program.
