Four people holding a check for the Sheffey scholarship

By Megan Nash

Fourteen years after Will Sheffey (B.S. ’90) passed away following a two-year battle with brain cancer, his name and spirit remain a fixture at the VCU School of Business.

Through the efforts of his Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers, the Will Sheffey Kappa Sigma Memorial Scholarship Endowment now stands at over $175,000, continuing to support business students and ensuring Sheffey’s enduring legacy.

Sheffey, who faced lifelong challenges due to a genetic condition that limited his muscle development, was known among friends for his perseverance and positive attitude. Craig Corrieri (B.S. ’92), one of Sheffey’s closest friends, recalled how Sheffey never let his condition hold him back and always found a way to fully participate in life.

“We played golf together. Will rock climbed. He didn’t drive a ball as far or run as fast, but he always found a place to be in the center of the mix,” Corrieri said in a 2021 interview with the VCU School of Business.

The scholarship, established shortly after Sheffey’s passing in 2010, originally started with a modest fundraising goal of $10,000. However, through the rejuvenated efforts of alumni—led by Corrieri, Brad Welles (B.S. ’87) and Kevin Jones (B.F.A. ’88)—and an annual golf tournament fundraiser, the fund has steadily grown. The fraternity has set its sights on expanding the endowment further, with the goal of making it one of the most substantial scholarship funds within the VCU School of Business.

Since the beginning, the scholarship has proven to be more than financial aid. Over the years, recipients have also been welcomed into the Kappa Sigma brotherhood.

Nicholas Allen (B.S. ’25), a recent recipient, said the scholarship’s financial support has motivated him: “It’s inspiring to be part of something like this, even after I graduate.”

Along with Allen, scholarship recipients include:

2023-2024
Samhita Bollineni (B.S. ’24, marketing)
Amany Bouali (B.S. ’26, mass communications, business)
Zachary Jambois (B.S. ’25, information systems)
Parthay Patel (B.S. ’25, finance)

2024-2025
Nicholas Allen (B.S. ’25, business management)
Mason Barbour (B.S. ‘25, marketing)
Ameen Hosn (B.S. ’25, business management)
Sonia Kanchan (B.S. ’25, finance)
Gabrielle Martis (B.S. ’25, accounting, supply chain management and analytics)
