Chris Small

Chris Small understands the importance of taking a leap–and now he wants to make sure that the next wave of students can take that same plunge into a career in luxury real estate.

Earlier this year, Small pledged $50,000 over five years to establish the Global Real Estate Student Experience Fund. It’s a move he says is meant to give current business students a foothold in an industry that thrives on global perspectives and adaptability.

“VCU opened doors for me that I didn’t even know existed at the time,” said Small.

As the owner-broker of Small & Associates Real Estate and lead agent of the Chris Small Group in Richmond, Small recalls how his education provided “the freedom to explore” and develop the kind of adaptability that would later prove essential for navigating the luxury real estate market.

Luxury real estate is, in Small’s view, a field that demands a unique blend of business acumen and cultural intelligence. “It’s not just about high-end properties,” he said. “It’s about understanding the global economy, cultural trends and the psychology of buyers.”

The new fund will support VCU Business students in gaining practical experiences–whether through internships, study abroad trips or hands-on projects–that will prepare them for a globalized and often competitive sector.

“I want students to feel confident stepping into it [luxury real estate], knowing they have the skills, connections and knowledge to succeed,” he said. “I want students to gain not only technical real estate knowledge, but also critical soft skills like cultural competence and global awareness.”

Unlike many financial contributions that have a narrow focus, Small’s fund is deliberately broad. There’s no specific partnership or program tied to it, and it’s not restricted to a particular path within the real estate program.

“The School of Business has always been forward-thinking, and aligning myself with its vision has been a natural choice,” said Small.

Although he currently serves on the VCU Foundation Board of Trustees, Small’s involvement at the university has largely remained behind the scenes. His hope is that this endowment, and the experiences it facilitates, will “act as a catalyst,” encouraging other luxury firms to recognize the potential of VCU Business’ real estate students and invest in their growth.

“Donating to education is one of the most impactful ways to make a difference. You’re not just helping one person–you’re shaping industries and communities for years to come.”

If you would like to support VCU Business students as they explore opportunities through the Global Real Estate Experience Fund, consider making a gift. Every contribution helps open doors for the next generation.
