VCU Business senior Zach Miller takes the wheel at Enterprise and floors it
By Megan Nash
While many students use summer internships to test the waters of the business world, Zach Miller (B.S. ’24) dove right in. A senior studying marketing with a minor in sales at the VCU School of Business, Miller landed a three-month internship with Enterprise Mobility this past summer, where he quickly made a lasting impression.
Selected from a competitive pool of applicants statewide, Miller was one of only 15 chosen for Enterprise’s summer program. Within just a month, he became a standout performer and the only intern to qualify on the company’s performance matrix—a fast-track achievement that earned him an invite to continue his internship through the fall.
This was no coincidence. His journey to this point has been shaped by VCU Business’ Career Services and networking opportunities, which helped him explore different career paths and prepared him for his time at Enterprise.
“I looked at several intern prospects, but pursued Enterprise because the company has an awesome training program and upward mobility opportunities that appealed to me,” Miller said.
This drive is rooted in his choice to major in marketing. “I chose marketing because it plays a crucial role in every aspect of business,” he said. “A degree in marketing equips you with versatile skills that can prepare you for your future career.”
During his internship, Miller’s responsibilities were extensive and varied. He managed fleet planning, ensuring that consumers had the right vehicle upon arrival, handled rental contracts and even dealt with customer service challenges.
“Each day presented new situations and challenges that required quick thinking,” said Miller. “I learned time management and perfected my problem-solving skills.”
The sales aspect of the internship was where Miller found his stride. “Being highly competitive, and enjoying interaction with others, I thrived in this environment,” he said.
But the internship wasn’t without its hurdles. Miller remembers the early days when he pushed out of his comfort zone.
“Answering the phone the first few days was nerve-wracking,” Miller admitted. “I was anxious about making mistakes, especially in front of my boss.” Still, he powered through, using the moment to grow.
As he approaches his December 2024 graduation, Miller is looking ahead with confidence and is already taking what he learned over the summer and applying it to both his studies and his future career path.
“I’ve gained exposure to various aspects of the business and built connections with corporate personnel,” said Miller. His goal? To secure a full-time position with Enterprise as a Manager in Training.
“This experience gave me the hands-on knowledge I needed. Now I’m ready to take it to the next level.”
