Fantasy sports: Brendan Dwyer on the boom, the busts and the buy-ins

“Fantasy sports have really changed how fans watch sports,” says Brendan Dwyer, Ph.D., professor and director of research and distance learning at the Center for Sport Leadership at VCU.

Gone are the days of simply rooting for the home team. Now, Sundays are spent juggling lineups, agonizing over every injury, and yes, blaming players for fantasy season busts. It’s a new level of fandom that borders on obsession.
But, as Dwyer warns, there’s a dark underbelly—from athlete dehumanization to the blurred lines between fantasy sports and real-world betting.
