All Blackbird<\/em> audio and video used to be hosted on VCU’s video server. Around volume 10, we were advised by the instituion to start using a different area of that server to deliver video through Flash. The video.vcu.edu server went down long before Flash was deprecated, but at the time, I was overwhelmed and did did not get all the video content moved to Kaltura.

In ongoing work with the Founders Archive, I will attempt to restore any broken or missing content where that is at all possible. This week, I restored the wonderful video essay by Robyn Shiff and Nick Twemlow titled “Radon.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On behalf of the Founders Archive I posted an announcement of this restoration on the journal’s ongoing Facebook page, and on its Instagram account.

Of course, our promotion is also linked to that of the relaunched journal, as every page of the Founders Archive has an “open current issue” link, all of which were updated in the spring semester 2024. (After the migration of legacy content to blackbird-archive.vcu.edu by VCU Libraries and the forwarding filters put in place, all those “open current” links were returning 404s; that’s one of the first things we worked to mend at scale in the 43 issue archive.)

The plan is for the Founders Archive to use “throwback Thursdays” as a time to announce restored content, or suggested content to revisit. As we hear from educators using Blackbird content in their classrooms, we also hope to share their stories through social media as well.

Much of the work going on this summer has been on figuring out next steps on material items and spaces.

Hibbs 340, is for the moment, a space where I have stored backup drives, print and media materials awaiting digitization, including, for instance, tapes of Larry Levis. That space may be taken away from the project in fall of 2025 over space concerns as it is slated to become a private office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department had also previously assigned an office for the journal in Anderson 101-A, but “unassigned” it after Covid, but with no plan, nor directive, to clear it out. The new editors have no stake in it; the current TAs do not work from it, and so, again, by default, though it is not space assigned to me or the Founders Archive, for the good of the journal’s legacy, and in an attempt to preserve select papers, award plaques, art, and photographs from the room, I will be meeting with Mary Flinn to try to start clearing that space ASAP rather than letting those materials be cleared as trash. (Our first attempt more than two weeks ago on a day when the building’s AC was broken, was brought to a halt when trying to run the room’s AC to compensate tripped a breaker and blew out the overhead–and only–light.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My focus has been away from the digital archive in summer has been centered on finding, organizing, and some start of scanning materials that I want to make sure are preserved in the archive annex pages. Likewise, I’m making certain to preserve some of our early correspondence, a slow process.

The departmental web site updated the Blackbird<\/em> information page and included a link to the Founders Archive. The change did not have an updated logo, had a broken link, and omitted my name as the person heading the archive edit. Those issues were corrected and published on 7\/29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My next material step in the archive itself will be to visit videos that were disabled by the previous loss of a video flash server. When I republish media content, I will do so on the Kaltura account owned by blackbird-archive. Once these media files have been found, republished, and repaired in pages, I will then begin the process of moving\/republishing all media content on the Kaltura site under the blackbird account, again, making sure that media on legacy issues that depends on a media server is all pointed to the blackbird-archive managed site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

As I moved toward the later volumes, there was far less work to be done as I had cleaned up the template somewhere along the way, and most of the changes were made in one include file, one root level (issue) file and the index file.

Of course I will find bits and misses as I move back through for other fixes, but I’m confident that the “open current issue” button in the 43 issues now take readers to the new journal at the blackbird.vcu.edu URL, whereas before these links were throwing up a frustrating 404 page.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea, of course, is to bolster the throughput from legacy Blackbird content to the new journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m heading next to look at video for several issues that was on (at the encouragement of the tech powers that be at the time) the “Flash video server.” Fingers crossed that I have access at hand for all the video files that aren’t working without having to search through external drives.

These files will be uploaded the the blackbird-archive Kaltura account, embedded in the content page, and republished. After mending these non-working files, I will eventually also migrate all later media on the blackbird.vcu.edu Kaltura account to the blackbird-archive.vcu.edu Kaltura account a republish. (Whether new Blackbird chooses to publish any audio or video media on Kaltura or not, that account is tied to the new journals login and password, and the effort here is to consolidate all legacy materials under the blackbird-archive accounts for cleaner management.

I believe that all the deprecated Flash pages were repaired with Ruffle, but I will be auditing all that content. I know at least one Myron Helfgott piece was broken not because of Flash\/Ruffle issues, but because of a missing image or broken path and a need to convert and republish the base audio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piece in question is v8n1’s “Tyranny of the Theoretical.” The first zoom interface works, the second does not, showing only a blank square; however, both run and work inside of Dreamweaver\/Adobe setups when I click on the SWFs, so still need to troubleshoot where the glitch is; I mistakenly assumed an image path error, but now I think not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am up to v10n2. I also added a missing Afterword section in v9n2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m now intersecting with issues that K worked on from the other direction. I’m also still making changes that I had not directed K. to make as I am now more in tune with many more bits and bobs that need updating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, I realized as of this issue that a search and replace I was doing to replace the code for the open current issue button (which had pointed all the way to an index file) was too granular, of course, to find any other uses of the URL with the historically VCU-required www prefix. I’m going to mend that for v9n2, but then will need to look again in previous issues on a second passthrough later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sidebar: I was in a conversation with someone some years ago now who disputed that there was ever a requirement for the www in VCU URLS. I can assure there was, I told him. It was the subject of complaint in many meetings in the mid nineties and after. One school, as I recall, put up a billboard with their URL on it lacking the www and it didn’t not work. That was a dust up. I even specifically remember a specific employee named Vernon, whose office was somewhere downtown in the sub-basement of a building there, explaining, deadpan, and slowly, why this couldn’t be changed.

I tell this because it speak to how common it is, if you have been working for somewhere for a couple decades plus, just how short institutional memory is, and how quickly people who were not witness to that past confidently proclaim that someone speaking to a fact of history is simply wrong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
