  • VCU Libraries’ Jurgen Comics Contest deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. EST on February 9, 2023.

VCU students from all departments, working individually or in teams, are invited to enter by creating a single-page, vertical-format work that explores this year’s theme: Codes, Censorship and Conflict.

Codes can mean a lot of different things! There are industry self-censorship codes (like the Comics Code and Hays Code), legal codes that define obscenity and libel, and codes of ethics that guide librarians facing censorship challenges. Contest submissions can be fiction or nonfiction, set in the past, present or future, on this planet or another. As always, the contest webpage is a great place to visit for inspiration and helpful tips.

VCU Libraries is very excited to sponsor this opportunity to engage with VCU’s talented student community, and we look forward to seeing the breadth of creativity they will bring to this year’s prompt.
